Description

This Southern Banana Cobbler is a warm, comforting dessert made with sweet ripe bananas baked under a golden, fluffy cobbler topping. Perfect with a scoop of ice cream or whipped cream, itโ€™s a simple Southern-style treat full of cozy flavor.

Ingredients

  • For the Banana Filling:
  • 6 ripe bananas, sliced (about 1/4 inch thick)
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • Pinch of salt
  • For the Cobbler Topping:
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/4 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup buttermilk, cold
  • 6 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted and slightly cooled
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Optional Topping:
  • Turbinado sugar, for sprinkling
  • Whipped cream or vanilla ice cream, for serving

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350ยฐF (175ยฐC) and lightly grease a baking dish.
  2. In a bowl, combine sliced bananas, granulated sugar, brown sugar, melted butter, water, lemon juice, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Mix gently.
  3. Pour banana mixture into the prepared baking dish.
  4. In another bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  5. Add buttermilk, melted butter, and vanilla extract. Stir until just combined (do not overmix).
  6. Spoon cobbler batter over the banana mixture evenly (it will spread as it bakes).
  7. Sprinkle with turbinado sugar if using.
  8. Bake for 35โ€“45 minutes, or until the top is golden and set.
  9. Let cool slightly before serving.
  10. Serve warm with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream.

Notes

  • Use very ripe bananas for the best sweetness and flavor.
  • Do not overmix the topping to keep it light and fluffy.
  • Let the cobbler rest for 10โ€“15 minutes before serving for better texture.
  • Add a splash of bourbon or rum to the filling for a deeper Southern flavor (optional).
