French Onion Chicken Orzo Casserole combines tender chicken, caramelized onions, creamy orzo, and a blend of cheeses for a comforting and flavorful dinner that’s perfect for any weeknight.


Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • ยฝ teaspoon salt
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 ยฝ cups orzo pasta
  • 2 cups cooked shredded chicken (rotisserie works well)
  • ยฝ teaspoon dried thyme
  • ยผ teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 cups low-sodium chicken broth
  • 1 cup heavy cream or half and half
  • 1 ยฝ cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • ยฝ cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • Optional: ยฝ teaspoon Worcestershire sauce or balsamic glaze


Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375ยฐF (190ยฐC).
  2. In a large skillet, heat butter and olive oil over medium heat. Add onions, sugar, and salt; cook until caramelized, about 15 minutes.
  3. Add garlic and cook 1 minute more.
  4. Stir in orzo, shredded chicken, thyme, and black pepper.
  5. Pour in chicken broth and cream; stir until combined. Cook 2โ€“3 minutes until slightly thickened.
  6. Transfer mixture to a greased baking dish. Top with mozzarella and Parmesan cheese.
  7. Bake 20โ€“25 minutes until cheese is melted and bubbly. Optionally, drizzle Worcestershire sauce or balsamic glaze over top before serving.
