Description

French Onion Chicken Orzo Casserole is a comforting and flavorful dish with caramelized onions, tender shredded chicken, creamy sauce, and cheesy baked orzo pasta.


Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • ยฝ teaspoon salt
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 ยฝ cups orzo pasta
  • 2 cups cooked shredded chicken (rotisserie works well)
  • ยฝ teaspoon dried thyme
  • ยผ teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 cups low-sodium chicken broth
  • 1 cup heavy cream or half and half
  • 1 ยฝ cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • ยฝ cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • Optional: ยฝ teaspoon Worcestershire sauce or balsamic glaze


Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375ยฐF (190ยฐC).
  2. In a large skillet, heat butter and olive oil over medium heat. Add onions, sugar, and salt; cook until caramelized, about 15-20 minutes. Add garlic and cook 1 more minute.
  3. Cook orzo pasta according to package directions until al dente; drain.
  4. In a large bowl, combine caramelized onions, shredded chicken, cooked orzo, thyme, black pepper, chicken broth, cream, and optional Worcestershire sauce. Stir until combined.
  5. Transfer mixture to a greased baking dish. Top with mozzarella and Parmesan cheese.
  6. Bake for 20-25 minutes until cheese is melted and bubbly. Serve warm.

Notes

  • For extra depth, drizzle a bit of balsamic glaze over the top before serving.
  • Can use leftover chicken or rotisserie chicken for convenience.
  • Make ahead and bake just before serving for a fresh casserole.
