These Easy Cheesy Meatball Subs are a quick, flavorful dinner or lunch option featuring juicy meatballs, marinara sauce, and melted cheese, all inside a toasted sub roll.
Ingredients
For the Meatballs
- 1 lb ground beef or a mix of beef and pork
- ยฝ cup breadcrumbs
- 1 large egg
- ยผ cup grated onion
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tsp Italian seasoning
- ยพ tsp salt
- ยฝ tsp black pepper
For the Sauce and Assembly
- 2 cups marinara sauce
- 4 hoagie or sub rolls
- 1 ยฝ cups shredded mozzarella cheese
- 4 slices provolone cheese (optional)
- ยผ cup grated Parmesan cheese
- 1 tbsp butter (optional, for toasting rolls)
- Fresh basil or parsley for garnish (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375ยฐF (190ยฐC).
- In a large bowl, combine ground meat, breadcrumbs, egg, grated onion, minced garlic, Italian seasoning, salt, and black pepper. Mix well.
- Form mixture into meatballs and place on a baking sheet. Bake 15โ20 minutes until cooked through.
- Meanwhile, warm marinara sauce in a saucepan.
- Slice rolls and optionally butter them. Layer meatballs on rolls, spoon sauce over, and top with mozzarella, provolone, and Parmesan.
- Bake assembled subs for 5โ10 minutes until cheese melts. Garnish with fresh basil or parsley and serve.
Notes
- Meatballs can be made ahead and frozen for convenience.
- Substitute beef with ground turkey or chicken for a lighter version.
- Add extra veggies like peppers or mushrooms inside the subs for variety.
